Special Olympics Waikato athlete Alex Johnsen is feeling “really excited” about being selected for the Special Olympics New Zealand Global Messenger Programme.
Alex started playing soccer with Special Olympics Waikato in 2009 and now also competes in powerlifting and basketball, as well as helping out with fundraising for the Club.
“Special Olympics is really really fun. It keeps me fit, it’s good for exercise and I’ve been able to meet lots of new people and make new friends all around the country.”
Alex has already done a lot of public speaking in the Waikato area and is looking forward to using these skills in his new role as Global Messenger to help promote Special Olympics.
“It’s a fun place to play sports. As a Global Messenger I can learn, support other athletes in their sport, and talk to people to let them know how good Special Olympics is.”
Outside of Special Olympics Alex keeps himself busy doing volunteer gardening work in the community, and working for his parents’ property management business, where he helps out with administration and paperwork. He also attends the local CHOICES and Community Living services for people with disabilities.
