Special Olympics has always been a family affair for Kyle Harpur. His mother was on the Special Olympics Canterbury Committee and his brother Wayne was an athlete when he joined the athletics team in 1984, training under 1974 Commonwealth Games athlete Mene Mene.
Over the past 30 years Kyle has enjoyed considerable athletic success. He competed at the Special Olympics World Summer Games 1987 in Indiana, USA where he won a gold medal in the shot put; and was named Christchurch Junior Sportsman of the Year later that year.
Kyle now trains in indoor bowls and bocce and has started coaching. He recently set up his own lawn mowing business.
“As a Global Messenger I’m looking forward to extending my communication skills, sharing my experiences with others and becoming more involved in the committee side of things,” he says.
