Special Olympics Auckland athlete Martin Joyce is understandably “feeling very proud” in his selection to the Special Olympics New Zealand national Athlete Leadership Programme.
He has been with Special Olympics since 1998, training in basketball, athletics, aquatics and snowboarding and has represented the organisation internationally twice.
In 2007 Martin was a member of the delegation that travelled to Shanghai, China for the Special Olympics World Summer Games. Competing in athletics, he found the experience an “eye opener”, particularly as it was his first time overseas (“Shanghai was very busy”). In 2012 he competed against several Australian basketball teams at the inaugural Special Olympics Trans Tasman Tournament in Wellington.
Through the Athlete Leadership Programme Martin hopes to encourage others to get involved with Special Olympics New Zealand and raise awareness about the opportunities available.
“I really like being part of Special Olympics. It has allowed me to meet new people, be with friends and go to competitions,” he says.
A “technical whizz”, Martin is gaining valuable mentoring experience through his voluntary position at Unitec helping out students with computing and writing.
