2012 was an exciting year for Paul Hunter. In February he got married to his long-term girlfriend Kirsty at Chatto Creek, Central Otago, and together the couple recently added Lucky the cat to their new family. To top off a great year, Paul has been named a member of the 2013 Class of Global Messengers.
"I want to get more people involved in Special Olympics and get them talking about it, and knowing what it's all about," says Paul of his ambitions as a Global Messenger.
"For me Special Olympics is all about having fun and meeting new people," says the keen sportsman.
Since joining Special Olympics Central Otago in 1996, Paul has competed in bocce, indoor bowls, athletics, swimming, snowboarding, tenpin bowling, and table tennis with the Club.
A major highlight of his time with the organisation so far was travelling to the 2003 World Summer Games in Ireland where he competed in various running events, achieving two fourth placings, one fifth placing and "five PB's".
Paul keeps fit by running three days a week and doing gym training four days a week. His high level of fitness has enabled him to complete four half marathons and one 10 kilometre race.
Alongside his training Paul works part-time at New World, and regularly helps out with sporting events at nearby Alexandra Primary School.
