Jason Ewens has competed with Special Olympics for 30 years. During that time he has received 45 medals, 22 ribbons, attended two World Summer Games, and made many friends along the way.
"I've got good friends that I've known for years from all over New Zealand," says Jason. "Special Olympics really has become a big part of my life."
Tenpin bowling and golf are the two sports Jason competes in with Special Olympics Tauranga, both which have seen him represent New Zealand on the international stage.
In 1999 he competed in tenpin bowling at the World Summer Games in North Carolina, USA, and in 2007 he came fourth in his golfing event at the World Summer Games in Shanghai, China. That same year Jason was invited to play in a special trans-Tasman golf tournament on the Gold Coast in Australia.
"Representing New Zealand at two World Games has been the best thing I've achieved so far with Special Olympics. I'm now aiming for the next World Summer Games in Los Angeles."
As a Global Messenger, Jason is looking forward to meeting new people, having fun, and speaking to others about Special Olympics.
Along with tenpin bowling and golf, Jason's other sporting passion is fishing. He also works full-time at Copperfield Nurseries in Te Puna, near Tauranga.
