Becoming a Global Messenger is the latest in a long list of outstanding achievements Andrew Oswin has realised since he joined Special Olympics Canterbury nine years ago.
Some of these successes include winning two gold medals in the shotput and 4 x 100 metre relay events at the 2011 World Summer Games in Athens, Greece, and being named Athlete of the Year two years in a row, for floor hockey in 2010, athletics in 2011, and Overall Athlete of the Year in 2011 at Special Olympics Canterbury's annual awards ceremonies.
It is experiences like these that gave Andrew the desire to take part in Special Olympics New Zealand's national Athlete Leadership Programme.
"I wanted to become a Global Messenger because of what I have achieved with Special Olympics New Zealand. I want to give something back. I plan to serve my Canterbury Club with the same pride and respect they have showed me since I joined when I was 13," he says.
Andrew should slip into his new leadership and public speaking role with ease, having already spent considerable time this year spreading the word about Special Olympics to various schools and community groups in the Canterbury region.
