Nigel Simmons

Nigel-Simmons.jpgNigel Simmons first got involved with Special Olympics 10 years ago when he took another athlete to training at the Special Olympics Club in Nelson and liked what he saw. Nigel has never looked back since; not only becoming a lot fitter since joining the organisation, but gaining more confidence when speaking in public as well.

“I used to be quite shy but being involved with Special Olympics has really brought me out of my shell,” says Nigel.
Swimming is Nigel’s main sport but he also keeps fit by participating in track and field, bocce and indoor bowls. If that’s not enough to keep him busy, he is also Secretary for Nelson Club’s Athlete’s Committee, a job he’s done for three and a half years.
Now that he has added Global Messenger to his list of activities, Nigel aims to encourage other athletes to get involved with Special Olympics and achieve their goals. “I want to get them motivated and get them to believe in themselves,” he says.
