It’s rare to find Thomas Van der Lugt at home. The 23-year-old Dunedin athlete leads a busy lifestyle, cycling for fitness (and we’re talking significant distances here), playing football (soccer), futsal and skiing most weekends in winter.
Thomas achieved significant success at the last World Winter Games winning Gold and Silver medals. He says the trip opened his eyes to “just how global Special Olympics is”.
On top of his sporting commitments he spends his days with Cargill Trust participating in all manner of activities from gardening to fundraising.
Thomas is looking forward to sharing his enthusiasm for sport and the community with others as a Global Messenger.
“Becoming a Global Messenger is a real privilege and I’m keen to be a mentor for Cargill Trust and new Special Olympics New Zealand athletes.”
Thomas works for Otago community access radio station, Oar FM with his own show 'The Special Olympics Show with Thomas' each Wednesday from 11.00am to 12.00pm - listen to recent shows.
