Crystal Frethey, Kathy Gibson - Special Olympics Chief Executive Officer and Prime Minister John Key.
Crystal Frethey became a Global Messenger because she wants to get more people involved in Special Olympics. She wants to share the message of Special Olympics to more people in New Zealand – especially, she says, to young people. She really wants to encourage more school children to join.
Crystal participates in swimming, powerlifting, equestrian, athletics, basketball and indoor bowls. She has been involved with Special Olympics for 14 years and represented New Zealand in powerlifting at the World Games in North Carolina in 1999.
Crystal has shown leadership in her local Club and region: she is the basketball captain and has served for seven years on the local South Otago Special Olympics Committee.
When Crystal isn’t training or competing, she enjoys music, socialising and working with animals – and she is an active volunteer for Riding for the Disabled and for the Epilepsy Annual Appeal. Crystal is a PACT (Patients and Community Trust) Client Representative.
Crystal wants to make a difference for others. Her aim as a Global Messenger is to pass on the message of Special Olympics to as many people in New Zealand as possible.
