Stewart Hewett

Like many Special Olympics volunteers Stew Hewett became involved in the organisation through a family member. His daughter Katrina is an Alpine skier with Special Olympics North Otago and has represented the country internationally, most recently at the 2013 World Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea.

While he started off coaching bocce, swimming, and winter sports in 1993, Stew’s dedication to Special Olympics saw him quickly increase his involvement across the North Otago Club, Lower South Island, and also at a national level.
He has chaired and coordinated Special Olympics North Otago since 1994, has attended all National Summer Games and National Winter Games in a Head of Delegation, Head Coach or Technical Director capacity, chairs the Lower South Island Regional Council and sits of the Special Olympics Board.
Stew is one of Special Olympics New Zealand’s most experienced and skilled Alpine skiing coaches, and has led international teams to Special Olympics World Winter Games, notably Alaska, USA in 2001 and Boise, Idaho, USA in 2009. He was the New Zealand team’s Family Coordinator at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Ireland in 2003.
Stew has been actively involved in local, national and international fundraisers and will initiate fundraising ventures where he sees a need (such as fundraising for eight local athletes to attend the 2013 PyeongChang, South Korea Games).
A Constable with the North Otago Police Force, Stew was selected as New Zealand’s representative in the 2013 PyeongChang, South Korea Games’ Law Enforcement Torch Run. There he joined 130 other Torch Runners and Team Leaders from 18 countries, to run the breadth of South Korea, before joining in the organisation’s Polar Plunge fundraiser. Both events collectively raised more than $US120,000.
Stew was made a Life Member for North Otago Special Olympics in 2013. He is an extremely dedicated volunteer who Special Olympics New Zealand is proud to have as a national Life Member.
