Robin Sheffield has been an active member of Special Olympics New Zealand since the early 1990s, first as family support for son Duncan, who is one of our Alpine skiers, then at committee and board level.
Duncan’s selection for the 1997 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Toronto, Canada was a pivotal moment for Robin. During the year-long preparations for the trip, Robin’s interest in Special Olympics New Zealand’s governance was piqued. He was appointed to the Special Olympics New Zealand Board in 1997.
Robin’s tenure heralded the start of a more professional approach to the management of Special Olympics New Zealand and we have continued to build on this platform since. As Chair, he was involved in a number of significant fundraising initiatives and events including the 2005 Special Olympics National Summer Games in Christchurch, and 2006 Gala Dinner and Auction. His superb negotiation skills came to the fore when he secured the Special Olympics New Zealand’s Auckland premises at very reasonable rates despite a tight commercial property market.
