Glynis Collins

Glynis may be small in stature but she is mighty in character. At 83 she has more energy and dogged determination than many people half her age and has been the backbone of Special Olympics Whangarei for more than 30 years.

In addition to her current role of Treasurer of Special Olympics Whangarei (in which she keeps immaculate accounts), Glynis also coaches tenpin bowling, assists in coaching aquatics, indoor bowls, and athletics, organises fundraisers, maintains equipment and uniforms, handles clerical matters, liaises with outside agencies, and maintains the vehicle for the Club.
In the lead up to the Special Olympics New Zealand National Summer Games 2013 Glynis was the driving force behind Special Olympics Whangarei’s fundraising process. She completed extensive grant applications to ensure the Club had enough finances to send its team of 39 athletes, managers and coaches to Dunedin. Glynis planned every detail of their journey, down to ordering lunches on the way home on the bus.
Glynis has an amazing way with people and is very persuasive when it comes to recruiting sponsors and volunteers from different sources. She is one of Special Olympics New Zealand’s most astute, energetic and persistent volunteers, and an inspiration to everyone she meets.
