Colin Smith

Colin is a highly respected and much-valued volunteer within Special Olympics New Zealand.

In 1989 Colin co-founded Special Olympics Howick-Pakuranga. He assisted with weekly aquatics training and, from 1990, coached athletics. From 1992 to 1997 he was Coordinator of the Club and saw it expand its sports offerings and athlete numbers. Colin continued on the committee as Chair and Treasurer until 2004 when he transferred to Special Olympics Manukau, taking on a Club management role and coaching the Club’s bocce and indoor bowls teams in weekly training sessions. From 1996 to 2008 Colin also sat on the Special Olympics Upper North Island Regional Council and played a significant role in managing financial accounts and coordinating various projects.
Colin has never missed an opportunity for his athletes to participate in competition and has taken teams away on a regular basis to compete in local, regional, and national Special Olympics events. He has attended every National Summer Games since 1989 and has taken on managerial and operational roles at many of these.
In 2008 Colin attempted to retire from Special Olympics Manukau but his desire to see athletes attend the Special Olympics New Zealand National Summer Games 2009 in Palmerston North won over. He assisted our indoor bowls team in their preparation and training and as a result they successfully competed at the Games. He took a sojourn from Special Olympics (not retirement per se) between 2009 and 2012 but was back to assist the indoor bowls team after two volunteers moved out of Auckland. Colin is now settled as co-Chair for Special Olympics Manukau and continues to impart his extensive knowledge and experience to both committee members and new volunteers.
