Carol Melville

Carol first became involved as a volunteer with Special Olympics Otago in 1986. Working with a passionate local committee she has carefully nurtured and mentored new volunteers and as a result Special Olympics Otago has grown to be our second largest club in New Zealand.

Carol advocates very effectively for all her athletes and their families and she leaves no stone unturned in ensuring athletes under her wing have every opportunity available. She has led a number of Special Olympics Otago teams to events at regional and national level, and has always ensured a high level of pastoral care (and, when required, provided additional support to families and caregivers).

Over the years Carol has provided wise counsel and guidance to members of the Special Olympics Otago Committee, the Lower South Island Regional Council (which she chaired) and the Special Olympics New Zealand Board (on which she served as a Trustee). Carol has the ability to see the bigger picture and is never afraid to share her thoughts to support continuous improvement.

What Carol treasures most is "working with dedicated volunteers who give their time week by week and year by year in order to provide weekly training opportunity in sports disciplines". This is her main driver that has kept her actively involved for so many years.

While Carol has tried hard to retire from Special Olympics Otago over the past few years, she has been lured to stay on for a while longer and lead the Otago team at the National Summer Games 2013 in Dunedin. When she does retire she can be very proud of the outstanding legacy she will leave in Otago for others to emulate and follow. Carol is a true ambassador for the Special Olympics movement.
