Anne Stout

At Special Olympics Thames Valley’s recent 20th anniversary celebration held in Ngatea, the Club’s founding Chairman Mrs Anne Stout was presented with a Special Olympics New Zealand Life Membership Award.

Special Olympics Thames Valley began in 1996 with Anne gaining support to form it by advertising in the local paper, speaking to friends in Zonta and also parents from Goldfields School, where Anne was Principal at the time. Her drive once the club was running was to attend the National Summer Games in Christchurch in 1997 and this was achieved with six athletes and four support staff attending.

Anne stepped down from her role as chairman in 2001 but to this day has remained a committee member always ready to lend a hand where needed. Thames Valley’s indoor bowls ribbon days held in Ngatea in the winter wouldn’t be the same without her pot of soup.

Anne’s dedication to Special Olympics cannot be mentioned without remembering her husband Ron who spent much time also supporting Thames Valley. Sadly Ron passed away three weeks prior to the 20th anniversary celebration.

Special Olympics Thames Valley Chairman Jane Davis said, “Anne’s philosophy for Special Olympics was always to do the utmost for the athletes and to never let an opportunity go by! We thank her for her commitment and will be thrilled to see her at our meetings in the future.”
