Kathy Gibson has been Chief Executive Officer of Special Olympics New Zealand since March 2009.
In her role, she serves over 9,000+ Special Olympics athletes and 3,000+ dedicated volunteers throughout New Zealand.
Kathy graduated from Otago University with a Bachelor of Science and has post-graduate diplomas in Finance and Investment and Marketing and Administration from Auckland and Massey Universities respectively. She completed a Certificate in Fundraising from the Fundraising Institute of NZ in 2015.
Kathy has a strong leadership and fundraising background. Following an early career in merchant banking she joined Trade New Zealand in 1989. In 1992 she was posted to London, on a 4 year term, as New Zealand Trade Commissioner to the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Returning to Auckland in 1996 she had a variety of roles including consultancy work in business excellence and project management for the Millennium Cup Event on behalf of the New Zealand Marine Industry.
Prior to joining Special Olympics, Kathy was the CEO of Destination Manawatu for six years where she was responsible for strategic and financial planning, communication, regional marketing and external relationship management.
In January 2015 Kathy was elected to the Special Olympics Asia Pacific Leadership Council (APLC) for a two year term. In November 2015, she was appointed to the Special Olympics International (SOI) Board for a three year term and travels regularly to SOI headquarters in Washington DC to further to development of Programmes in the Asia Pacific region.
Kathy was appointed to the Board of Table Tennis New Zealand in November 2015 on a two year term. Kathy is also a former Board Trustee of the New Zealand Rugby Museum. She is a current member of the Institute of Directors.
Kathy commutes to Wellington on a weekly basis but enjoys returning to the family farm in Manawatu to join her husband and two teenage daughters. Relishing the time she spends with her extended family, she keeps fit through regular gym attendance, even when she is travelling. She has a passion for cooking and is an active member of the Feilding Contract Bridge Club and the Manawatu Golf Club.
