Tom’s talent supports Auckland Clubs

Tom Fernandez is a volunteer with a difference, who is making a big contribution to Special Olympics Clubs in the Auckland region.

Originally from Valparaiso in Chile, Tom is a trained journalist and photographer who has settled here in New Zealand with his Kiwi partner. Tom comes from a family that values giving back to your community. His Mum is a social worker back in Chile and provides free quality pre-school education for thousands of kids from lower-income families.

He trained in journalism in Chile, then found himself working as a full-time staff photographer for El Mercurio, Chile’s largest newspaper. In this role he covered stories including the 2010 earthquake and tsunami disaster, the 2011 student revolution and the 2015 FIFA Copa America. In 2015 he studied a Masters in contemporary photography in Madrid, during which time he covered semi-final games for the UEFA Champions league for El Mercurio.

Tom’s skills have been put to good use in the Auckland region and he’s attended several school and Club events, capturing hundreds of amazing memories.

When asked what he enjoys about volunteering with Special Olympics, Tom says, “Making people happy and doing what makes me happy - as simple as that. Documenting the events for kids and their families. Supplying good quality photo archives and helping to spread the mission of Special Olympics as an organisation amongst the community and social media.”

Thank you so much Tom!
