Sports rule change process

The second phase of the biannual review of Special Olympics International (SOI) sports rules has now been completed, following the Sports Rules Advisory Committee (SRAC) meeting in Toronto, Canada. This meeting was attended by our Manager of Sports Operations, Mike Ryan.

The committee met to discuss the more than 120 rule change recommendations that had been submitted for 33 of Special Olympics International’s summer and winter sports.

“It was interesting to note that of the 125 recommendations, 25 were submitted from the Special Olympics New Zealand community,” Mike said.

Recommendations from the SRAC meeting are now being shared with each of Sports Resource Team Chairpersons and sent to the SOI Sport Department for phase three of the review.

A summary document has also sent to SOI Legal Department for development of official resolution for approval. Resolutions for all sport-specific rules and Sport Rules Article 1 are presented to the Sport & Health Committee of the SOI Board for approvals.

For Sport Rules Article 1, the SOI Sport & Health Committee Chair then presents the recommendations to the Executive Committee of the SOI Board for final approval and sign off.

A target date of 1 July 2018 has been set for the approved Sport Rules changes and rules change summary documents will then to be posted to the SOI resources website.

As soon as these have been signed off, Special Olympics New Zealand will advise Clubs as to when any rule changes for our 13 sports will be implemented.

For any further advice or clarification on the above please email Manager of Sports Operations Mike Ryan
