Equestrian excellence in Wellington

Twelve athletes from Special Olympics Motueka, Manawatu and Wellington had their chance to qualify for a spot at the National Summer Games, at Special Olympics Wellington’s Tier 2 equestrian event at Hutt Valley Riding for the Disabled (RDA).

The competitors, the youngest of whom was just 12, took part in two formal events – Dressage and Equitation, and two fun events – Pole Bending and Working Trails.

“It was so great to see all of the athletes competing and witness the fantastic sportsmanship amongst all of the athletes and horses,” said Regional Sports Coordinator Jaimee Bialy. “We were very thankful for the nice weather which allowed the athletes to warm up in the outside arena.”

Senior riders Erin Gale and Dominique Gilling achieved some standout results, and William Cooper put in a great effort in his first event as Senior Coach/Assistant Event Manager for Special Olympics Wellington.

“A big thank you to Event Manager Bronwyn Hussey and the volunteers from Hutt Valley RDA, who gave up their time to be leaders, judges, officials, stable hands and so on, and to Special Olympics Motueka and Manawatu for travelling to the event,” Jaimee said.

“It was also fantastic to see so many families come along to celebrate the success of our athletes.”
